Maalaea sits north of Kihei on the southwest end of the isthmus between the West Maui Mountains and Haleakala. Its position between these two mountains and proximity to the sea is what causes the strong winds in this area. You will notice the long line of windmills above the harbor making the most of this windy situation. This wind farm contributes to Hawaii’s Clean Energy Initiative and provides energy to over 18,000 homes.12 This is just one example of the use of sustainable energy in Hawaii and on Maui.
In terms of commute time, Maalaea is only minutes away from both Kihei and Wailuku and is a very reasonable twenty-some minute drive from Lahaina. Not only is Maalaea in the center of the other towns but there is a lot to enjoy here as well. You may enjoy taking a long, relaxing walk on Maalaea beach, or watch whales from your oceanfront condo lanai, or you may enjoy the easy access to board the boats at Maalaea Harbor for dinner cruises, whale watching tours and snorkel trips to Molokini. Maalaea is also home to the Maui Ocean Center and Maui Golf and Sports Park...like I said, there is a lot to enjoy!
