On the west side of Maui, the town of Kaanapali is located a couple of miles north of Lahaina. Prior to the 1960s, this area was mainly sugar cane. In the 1960s the board of the Sugar Cane Plantation and land owners got together and decided to build the very first destination resort in Hawaii. With its miles of white sand and pristine waters, there was no better location for this resort than on Kaanapali Beach.
At the northern end of Kaanapali Beach is Black Rock, also known as Puu Kekaa. This area has excellent snorkeling and there is a daily ritual at sunset where a cliff diver will dive off Black Rock into the ocean. On the other side of Black Rock the beach continues on to Kahekili Beach Park. There is a paved path that makes for easy commute along the beaches and between the resorts and condominium complexes. In the evening, whether you are walking the path or the beach, you will be treated to some of the most amazing sunsets of your life.
