About Maui...

The island of Maui's residential population, according to the 2000 census, is 117,644, with 59,175 male and 58,469 female.  The census was taken several years ago and it will be a few more years until a new one is done; however, the Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, Research and Economic Analysis Division, projected residential population for 2005 at 140,050.  This same division stated in their 2004 Annual Visitor Research Report that on any given day, there is an average of 45,517 visitors in Maui County.  The average length of stay for a visitor on Maui is 7.47 days, on Lanai is 3.29 days and on Molokai is 4.28.

In the year 2000, Maui County had a total of 56,377 housing units, according to the Maui County Data Book 2005, table 8.2.2.  Maui has grown since 2000, but the statistics are also based upon census data.  Of the 56,377 housing units, 25,039 were owner occupied with an average of 3.13 living in the household.  Tenant occupied units totaled 18,468 with an average of 2.62 living in the household.  Thus proving investing in properties on Maui is a great way to go.  If you've noticed that the numbers didn't add up, the remainder of the housing is attributed to seasonal, recreational, or occasional use of the housing.

The island of Maui consists of 470,080 acres or 734.5 square miles, according to table 3.1.1 of the Maui County Data Book 2005.  Land ownership on Maui is divided between the State of Hawaii/County of Maui, Hawaiian Home Lands, federal government, major private landowners, and small private landowners(less than 5000 acres).  Approximately 194,836 acres are conservation land, 244,726 acres are used for agriculture, 4,053 acres are rural areas, and 22,185 acres are urban.  These numbers were obtained from the Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism, Land Use Commission records and differ slightly from official figures based on measurements by the Georgraphy Division of the US Bureau of the Census.

Maui is paradise mainly because of its climate.  The following two charts are excerpts from table 3.1.7 found in the Maui County Data Book 2005.  Their information was received from The US Department of Commerce, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, National Climatic Data Center's Climatological Data Annual Summary for 2004.
